As J.R Tolkien wrote; ‘ Not all those who wander are lost” - this was the inspiration for a small travel influenced branding I sketched up a few weeks ago. I guess sometimes both your thoughts and imagination are intertwined with your real-life work or subject.
Let me explain:
I began to sketch a tiger around the words ‘Where I Roam Feels Like Home’.
A few days later I read the news on December 23rd of yet another tsunami hitting the coast of Sumatra, just months after another tsunami devastated parts of Sulawesi on September 28th 2018.
I could only think of the thousands of people, families and communities who were affected and felt compelled to do more than donate just once.
For those who don’t know me, I work in the coffee industry - Indonesian coffee from the islands of Sulawesi and Sumatra are some of the most celebrated coffees I’ve come to know and a pillar within the company I work.
So, if I can share a piece of art, if it can be shared and encourage others to donate, if it can prompt storytelling and awareness to these parts of the world of the people we rely so heavily on; then my part is done. We’re all part of something much bigger than ourselves.
So i’m presenting these patches for the travellers, the explorers, the dreamers, the storytellers.
I’ll be donating 50% of the profits of these to disasters emergency committee for every patch sold in support of the Indonesia Tsunami Appeal.
The theme of the work is to roam and explore and through a turn of coincidences - it seems fitting to serve a greater purpose such as this - to support the islands from which I know we source incredible coffees and the communities who work tirelessly across this beautiful region.
I’m somebody who loves finding correlation in meaning. On a quick search, the dictionary blurb for the word ‘roam’ also references “tigers once roamed over most of Asia” - a poignant correlation, and by complete coincidence.
If there was ever a time or a place, or a piece of work I’d like to do to honour these places with, these people - it’s this one.
With these patches; You can iron on or sew them, and take them wherever you go... where ever may you roam or wander .
They’re up in my store now.
